Many times, the best developmental and performance reviews don’t come solely from employees’ managers – the most accurate reviews come from those who work with someone on a daily basis, both inside and outside of the organization. That’s why 360 Reviews are increasingly recognized as critical tools in any high-quality, balanced professional development program.

What is a 360 review? How do you use the 360 tools?

A 360 review is a process in which employees receive confidential, anonymous reviews from the people who work around them. This typically includes the employee’s manager, peers, and direct reports. Usually eight to 12 people in various positions fill out an anonymous online review form with questions covering a broad range of workplace competencies. The review forms, or 360 tools, include questions that are measured on a rating scale but also allow for written comments. The person being reviewed fills out a self-rating survey that includes the same survey questions the reviewers used.

Managers and leaders within organizations use 360 reviews and the 360 tools to get a better understanding of their team’s strengths and weaknesses. The 360 review system automatically tabulates the results and presents them in a format that helps the review recipient create a development plan. Individual responses are always combined with responses from other people in the same rater category (e.g. peer, direct report) to preserve anonymity and to give the employee a clear picture of his greatest overall strengths and weaknesses.

A 360 review is a strong development tool to help employees recognize strengths and weaknesses and become more effective.

A properly done 360 review is highly effective as a development tool. The opportunity to provide anonymous reviews may encourage honest insights that providers might otherwise be uncomfortable giving. Review recipients gain insight into how others perceive them and have an opportunity to adjust behaviors and develop skills that will enable them to excel at their jobs.
